Votes secure offices for county, district servants

For County Commissioner Precinct 4, DeLeon incumbent Jimmy Dale Johnson defeated Warren Mitcham of DeLeon by 145 votes. Johnson received 217 to Mitcham’s 72. As no Republican entered that particular commissioners race, Tuesday’s primary election served effectively as a general election for that race. David Ripley received 154 votes to Kenneth Feist’s 72 votes to secure the County Commissioner Precinct 2 position. Ellis Weathermon, also a Precinct 2 candidate received 43 votes.

For District Clerk, incumbent Brenda Dickey defeated challenger Lupe Prado by 628 votes. Dickey received 827 to Prado’s 199. Again, due to a lack of Republican interest in the office, the primary effectively served as the general election for District Clerk.

For Comanche County Democratic Chairman, DeLeon resident and current chairman Tjwanah Smith defeated challenger Dawson Hicks by 242 votes. Smith received 598 votes to Hicks’ 356.

ACCIDENT. A two-vehicle accident occurred Wednesday about 10:10 a.m. near the intersection of Hwy. 6 and County Road 470 four miles east of DeLeon. Dublin resident Enrique Olalde was driving eastbound in a Ford minivan on Hwy. 6 when he struck DeLeon resident Joe Smith’s Ford F-350 as Smith was attempting a u-turn on the highway. Both men suffered minor aches and pains. DeLeon fire, EMS, and DPS responded to the accident.

HOUSE FIRE. About 9 a.m. on Thursday, DeLeon firefighters responded to a house fire at the residence of Josh and Ruth Grumbles in the 400 block of Rusk St, after Ruth Grumbles awoke to find her bedroom filling with smoke. Firefighters managed to control the fire within 20 minutes of responding. A heater was possibly responsible for the blaze. A second fire occurred at a nearby residence in the 200 bock of Moseley St. Friday night, with heavy damage to some contents. DeLeon, Sipe Springs and Promontory Park responded. Again, a space heater was likely to blame.

Council reverses reversed decision

Alcohol ok again at park events

By JON AWBREY, Publisher

Crowds to Community Park events will now be able to bring their alcohol with them despite a determined resistance by a vocal crowd at City Hall Thursday night.

By a final vote of 3-2, the DeLeon City Council in a regular meeting approved the charging of cooler fees by event promoters at the DeLeon Community Park.

Council members Gail Stroud and Pauline Villarreal cast their votes in support of the measure while council members Bobby Schuman and Lee Childers voted against. DeLeon Mayor Danny Owen cast the deciding vote in support of the cooler fees, saying that he was not going to let “a million dollar park go down the drain.”

Council member Billie Lightfoot was not in attendance at the meeting.

In a series of public statements, a slight majority of local citizens voiced opposition to the measure.
“[Public drinking] has always gone on out there, and the law always knew it was going on and didn’t enforce it,” said DeLeon resident Jerry Solomon. “I don’t condemn people who use alcohol, but I don’t want them to kill me or some family. I encourage this council not to let this happen. It opens the door to lots of big problems.”

Gerald Fronk agreed. “After four hours of being out there,” Fronk said, “not one of those guys is going to pass a breathalyzer test, and then he’s going to get in his car and hit somebody.”

“Everybody’s concerned about money,” echoed Jackie Pounds. “That’s what this issue is right here. It was a family oriented deal, but it’s strictly gone commercial.

By JON AWBREY, Publisher

Comanche County Consolidated Hospital District Board of Directors met in a regular called meeting Tuesday, Feb. 23 approve an order for an election for two members of the hospital board, among other items of interest.

Directors approved several items related to upcoming May 8 election including an order for an election of two directors at large for Place 2 and Place 6 for the term beginning in May 2010 and ending in May 2013. The incumbent directors Billy Ray Evans and Karen Petty were unsure Tuesday if they were going to run for their place again.

It was reported that one interested candidate had already filed for the Board of Directors. Randy McCamey, a business professor at Tarleton State University and a resident of Duster, filed last week for the place Petty currently holds.

Directors also approved a contract with Comanche ISD and Comanche County for a joint election, as well as a separate resolution for a combined election with Comanche County, Comanche ISD, City of Comanche, City of DeLeon, DeLeon ISD, and the City of Gustine, and appointed Ruby Lesley and Karen Wilkerson as early voting clerks for Comanche and DeLeon.
