Thursday at City Hall

By JON AWBREY, Publisher

With primary elections less than a week away, early voting in Comanche County is winding down.

DeLeon residents have a golden opportunity to vote early Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at DeLeon City Hall.

Countywide, early voting ends Friday at 4:30 p.m. in the courthouse basement.

Six candidates, including those running for both county and district judge, are running unopposed.

Four races, including County Commissioner races in Precincts Two and Four and the District Clerk race, will be contested, with as many as four candidates vying for the Commissioner Precinct Two office.

DOWNING GENERAL STORE GOES UP IN FLAMES. About 8:50 p.m. Monday, the Travis Phillips residence on Hwy. 16 in Downing was destroyed by fire, despite a valiant effort by fire departments from DeLeon, Comanche, and Promontory Park. Only one resident was at home at the time, and he was able to escape safely from the flames. The cause of the fire was likely due to a faulty oven. The Phillips home, formerly Downing’s general store, housed a family of four. Above left, firefighters make a plan. Right, the burnt wreckage of a landmark ten hours later.

Court approves square for National Day of Prayer

By JON AWBREY, Publisher

Comanche County Commissioners Court buzzed with activity Monday, when nearly three dozen county officials and interested citizens crammed into the small courtroom.

Most of the crowd was on hand to show support for a request by Marilyn Sydow to gain permission to use the east side of the courthouse parking lot for a National Day of Prayer gathering at noon on May 6.

Sydow reported that this year will mark the eighth year that the National Day of Prayer has been celebrated in Comanche County. Last year, she said, over 100 Comanche County residents participated.

Sydow also asked for permission to use the square for a similar Awakening America event on Sept. 11.

Commissioners supported Sydow enthusiastically, and both requests were approved unanimously.

Misty Barron then addressed the court with a request to hold a car wash and bake sale on the west side of the courthouse square during the Comanche Celebrates event

Local chanteuse follows dream

By LAURA KESTNER, Editor

Kacey Roberts, 23, doesn't remember a time when singing wasn't an important part of her life.

From a very young age she sang at church, school and special events around the area, including the Peach and Melon Festival pageants each year.

And even though she chose nursing as her profession, singing is still her passion.

“I love to sing and I love to have people enjoy my singing as well,” Kacey said. “And even though I love nursing, I would love to be able to sing professionally.”

She might just get that chance.

Earlier this month, Kacey auditioned for the Millie Lewis Actors, Models & Talent Competition (AMTC) in the metroplex, and was accepted into the Christian-centered and family-oriented talent development company’s program.

It is billed as an experience designed to “educate, uplift, and present performers to an array of the best agents, managers and casting directors in the world.”

“These agents will judge competitions, teach you in seminars, and talk with you personally during interviews,” Kacey said. “I received a call the morning after the audition that I had been selected for AMTC! So now I will be going to Florida July 6-11 for the main competition which will be held at the Gaylord Palms Resort.”

Kacey, the daughter of John and Kay Hodges, views this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and although she’s excited about participating, she’s not nervous.

“Honestly this is the least nervous I have ever been,” she said.

Kacey, a 2004 DHS graduate, heard about the audition on the radio while driving home from her job at a Granbury care center recently.

“Immediately a feeling came over me and I knew that I was supposed to be at that audition,” she said.

“Come to find out the audition was in three days! So I told my husband Thomas that we were going to Dallas.”

Thomas, who underwent a kidney transplant in 2008, is proud that his wife is a nurse -- but he also understands and supports her desire to be singer.

“I’m not sure where this is going to lead,” Kacey said, “but I do know that this is a door that God has opened for me and I’m willing to see what he has in store for my life. I love being a nurse but I have always wanted to be a singer as well! So if the right opportunity presents itself to me I will jump on it in a heartbeat”

Although she’s been accepted into the AMTC program, Kacey must still find the necessary funding to complete the program. She and her family have fundraisers -- bake sales, brisket sales, etc. -- planned for the very near future. Anyone interested in helping Kacey can contact her at 254-734-6623 for further information.

“I have total faith that God is in control,” she said, “and he will lead me to where I need to go.”
