DeLeonians compete in County
Livestock Show
|
|
The Comanche County Junior Livestock
Show kicked off Saturday with 177 exhibitors and 336 entries ranging
from market swine to sheep and goats, heifers and steers, and
horses.
Many remarked that the unusually
pleasant weather was something of a novelty for stock show weekend.
A large number of DeLeon students
participated successfully in the show, with Shawn Skaggs winning
Reserve Grand Champion Breeding Beef Heifer, and Taylon Jobe winning
Reserve Grand Champion Yearling Gelding.
Waggoner Spurlen won Senior Showmanship
for Breeding Beef Heifers, Mattie McMeens won Junior Showmanship for
Breeding Beef Heifers, and Britini Brown won Senior Showmanship for
Market Swine.
The management of the show had a DeLeon
flair of its own with Jack Casey serving as president of the
Comanche County Livestock Association, David Lindsey serving as the
show’s market goats superintendent, and Dale Spurlen serving as the
show’s market swine superintendent.

Council hires police chief
By JON AWBREY, Publisher
|
|
DeLeon
has a new police chief following a marathon, five-hour-long city
council meeting Thursday night.
Jeff
Green, currently employed by the Morgan’s Point Resort Police
Department near Belton, was hired as police chief following a series
of interviews Thursday. Other candidates interviewed included Billy
Myrick of Wiley and Leonard Cox of Flatonia. Green will begin his
tenure in DeLeon on Feb. 1.
Green brings 16 years of wide law
enforcement experience to DeLeon, having served as a police chief
for five years at Holland, Texas. Green also served as an officer
and SWAT instructor in Pecos, Texas, and as an investigator at the
Stephenville Police Department.
In addition, Green spent many years
active duty as an infantry sergeant in the U.S. Army. He is a native
of the Farmer community in Crosby County, Texas.
“I think he’ll do good,” said DeLeon
City Administrator Karen Wilkerson. “He’s from a small town, and is
familiar with the small town atmosphere. I think he’ll fit in just
fine.”

NEW POLICE OFFICER.
Officer Robert Jolley was sworn into the DeLeon Police
Department Friday afternoon. |
Joining Green as a new hire to the
DeLeon police force is former Comanche County Sheriff”s Deputy
Robert Jolly of Hasse. Jolly, a native of Longview, is also an Army
veteran and a law enforcement officer with seven years of
experience. Jolly was sworn in as a DeLeon police officer on Friday
afternoon.
The council did, however, table a
motion to hire David Jenkins, a sheriff’s deputy from San Saba
County, as a DeLeon Police Officer. As the council had only hired a
chief moments before, it was felt that the new chief should have
input in the hiring decision.

Nabors assumes reins as
DeLeon Parks Coordinator
By LAURA KESTNER, Editor
|
|
Crystal Nabors is very enthusiastic
about the future of DeLeon’s Community Park, and as the city’s new
“parks coordinator” she can’t wait to get started on several big
projects.
“Not
every town has something like this,” Crystal said. “People might
think it’s just an arena out there, but it’s really not. There are
towns that have just an arena -- like a little play day arena -- but
that’s not what this is. It’s a big-time major deal that the city
has out there.”
Crystal currently lives in Desdemona
with her husband Benji Nabors, but prior to moving to this area two
years ago she worked at the Young County Arena in Graham.
“That’s a huge place,” Crystal said.
“It has a covered indoor arena, and an outdoor arena. I took care of
all the stalls and RVs over there, I was the barn manager.”
Crystal said that she and only one
other person “handled everything” at the arena.
“If anything needed to be done, it was
up to us,” she said. “I worked there for about a year. In all
honesty, if my husband hadn’t found me, I’d probably still be there,
that was my ideal job. I had planned to be there as long as I
could.”
