DeLeon Volunteer Fire Department BBQ Fundraiser

What makes a volunteer fire department? The obvious answer is volunteer firemen.

What makes a volunteer fireman? That question is rich with answers and as varied as the individuals who rush out to protect our lives and properties.

The DeLeon Volunteer Fire Department held their annual Barbecue Dinner fund raiser Saturday night at the DeLeon City Auditorium. Early reports are that the event gathered in a gross of around $6.900, representing at least $5.00 per plate.

DeLeon ISD Board Report

The consent agenda was reviewed by the Board which included the regular monthly reports and the appointment of Grace Everhart as the district tax collector. …

2009 QUEEN CANDIDATES

Courtney Caraway, above left, the 2008 Peach and Melon Festival Queen, will soon pass the crown and title to one of this year’s contestants. Four of those contestants, also pictured above, met for the “kick-off tea” Thursday, June 11, at The Scarlet Ibis. Pictured with Caraway are Kendal Kellam, Emilie Kristopherson, Kendra Howard and Megan Williams. In addition to these young ladies, there will be competitions for the title of Junior Miss DeLeon for girls in grades 5-8, and Petite Miss DeLeon for girls in grades 1-4. Kindergarten aged girls may compete for Little Miss DeLeon as before. COMMUNITY REHAB WORK UNDERWAY

Young people from around the county, state and nation are busy at work in DeLeon and Comanche County this week. Nine homes in DeLeon, one in Gustine and 11 in Comanche are having exterior remodeling work completed by young volunteers and their adult leaders. Homes being rehabilitated in DeLeon are at 417 S. Coke (above), 510 Humphrey, 217 Moseley, 117 S. Austin, 233 N. Bowie, 900 E. Reynosa, 417 W. Ayers, 501 N. Travis and 440 Francis. The rehab projects are made possible by donations of labor, materials and cash.
