Kennon Mitchel Barefoot, the 18-year-old son of Kerry and Lana Barefoot, was named salutatorian of the DHS class of 2008.

Mitch, who will graduate with a 4.03 grade point average, has only been in DeLeon schools since his sophomore year, but when his family moved here (both sets of grandparents already lived here), he quickly became involved in numerous activities, and is now one of the busiest of the high school students.

Mitch’s high school activities have included football, powerlifting, track, UIL, FFA, National Honor Society and Student Council. In football, Mitch was named 1st Team All-District offense, as well as 2nd Team All-District defense, and Academic All District. He also received Abilene All Big Country Honorable Mention offense and defense, AP All State Honorable Mention offensive line, All State 1st Team Academic, regional qualifier in powerlifting and Who’s Who awards in IPC, Math, Chemistry and History.

After graduation, Mitch said he plans to attend Tarleton State University and pursue a degree in environmental engineering.

In his spare time, Mitch said he enjoys lifting weights and exercising. “I also like messing around with computers, and video games,” he said. Mitch has one sister, Mackenzie, who is in 8th grade.

When he gets the chance, Mitch said he likes to go deer hunting with his father. He also said most of his favorite television shows are on the Discovery Channel.

Positive role models were not difficult for Mitch to find, as his parents are tops on his list. He also remembers a math teacher he had when he attended school in Holliday, Texas. “She was a good teacher,” he said, “she made me like math.” That love of math carried over, as he noted that math is still his favorite subject at DHS.

Although he’s made lots of friends in DeLeon, he said he found Brody Hammonds to be particularly fun, “because he made me try harder” at school work.

Graduation ceremonies for DHS are scheduled for Saturday, May 31, at 2 p.m. in the high school gym.
